The term "motivation" describes why a person does something. It is the driving force behind human actions. Motivation is the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. For instance, motivation is what helps you lose extra weight, or pushes you to get that promotion at work.

Through research with thousands of employees and leaders, we've discovered that there are five major motivations that drive people's actions at work; Achievement, Power, Affiliation, Security, and Adventure. For example, you might use intrinsic motivation when you feel inspired to complete a task because it aligns with your personal core values. If you volunteer for a community food bank because you derive motivation from helping others, you are likely well-motivated by intrinsic factors.

Helping others is thought to be one of the ways that people create, maintain, and strengthen their social connections. For example, volunteering and helping others can help us feel a sense of belonging.

Make new friends, connect with our communities, and will connect to the motivational status of a person.
